Which one use?
Introduction
You want to use a barcode to identify all the products in your enterprise?
You want to send e-mail with tickets containing a barcode to your clients?
You want to sell a product on the market?
You can use barcodes in many ways, but how can you choose the right barcode for the use you want to do?
There are many points you have to check before creating your barcodes.
Data to encode
The first thing you have to check is the information you want to encode in the barcode.
Do you want to encode numbers, letters, and special characters? Check the explanation of every barcode; some of them don't support letters,
others don't support special characters. Discard the ones which don't satisfy your needs.
How much information to encode
A really important data to know is how much information you want to encode in an unique barcode.
Many companies will simply encode an identifier in a barcode, when they will scan it, the information associated with this
identifier will be fetched from a server.
Some barcodes can be really big when you want to encode many data.
Others are more adapted for big data.
Sell a product
You want sell to your product in a supermarket? You have to get a license to use some of the barcodes in the public
for specific barcodes (UPC-A, UPC-E...) in order to identify your product.
The other barcodes can be use in any other application.
1D or 2D
With 1D barcode, you can save few data. In the other hand, these barcodes are really simple and really used.
Using 2D barcode can be a good solution if you want to encode many data.
All the 2D barcodes can also correct reading errors. Then your barcode is more reliable. If it fades, breaks, it will be easier
to decode it if it contains a good error correction level (this doesn't exist in 1D barcode).
You should check also the price of barcode reader you want to purchase, the price will vary depending on the information
it can decode.
Advice
You want to encode simple data on a 1D barcode without selling your product in a supermarket? we advise you to use
one of the most use: Code 39. This one contains all the capital letters and the numbers. Then you will be able to encode unique identifier.
If you want to encode sentences, we advise you to use the Code 128.
For 2D barcodes, the one really use for now is PDF417 barcode.
